Sculptural group depicting the Rejection of Joachim′s Offering, English (probably Southeast), early 16th century, oak.

Purportedly discovered in Kent.

Probably a section from an altarpiece showing the Life of the Virgin, this being the first section depicting an event that led to the Virgin′s immaculate birth. The scene shows an apocryphal episode (popular in late medieval art) when Joachim was denied entry into the temple of Jerusalem on account of Saint Anne′s childlessness. At the centre, a Levitical priest wearing a distinctive head dress stands before a draped altar. To the right, the figure of Joachim holds the leg of a now-missing carved lamb, offered as a sacrifice but rejected by the priest. The archway to the left symbolizes the closed temple.
