VERY SELDOM DO WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO OFFER AN EXCEPTIONAL ENGLISH MEDIEVAL SCULPTURE FOR SALE FROM THE 14TH CENTURY. GOD THE FATHER IS SCULPTURED FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF REDDISH-BROWN WEST COUNTRY OAK.LOSSES TO HANDS.

RECOVERED IN DORCHESTER, DORSET.

From the same workshop as the 14th-century stone reredos at Christchurch Priory. The facial type and beard are identical to a figure of King David carved on the Dorset reredos, and the same West Country workshop was also responsible for the upper row of figure on the West Front of Exeter Cathedral. The figure stands 128 cm tall and is carved from a single massive piece of reddish-brown West Country oak, which the back deeply hollowed. It is very likely that the figure came from Christchurch Priory and once stood in one of the now empty niches in the reredos, which were said to have originally contained wooden sculptures and are approximately the same height.

There are extensive traces of medieval polychrome and a number of ancient repairs - including a later medieval patch to the drapery and crack to the right side secured with old ironwork.
