The Dish is of a substantial size and is rectangular in form, with a gadrooned rim and base. The unusual domed hinged cover is decorated with wide lobing and terminates in a very unusual fluted urn finial. The base of the cover is engraved with a contemporary Crest, issuing from the coronet of a Duke. This piece also has six removable interior pans, all fully marked, which is a very rare feature indeed. The dish has a turned fruitwood handle and inner water compartment, which can be filled through a hinged compartment on the silver section of the handle. The chain on the handle can be attached to the finial, so that the cover remains upright when serving. The small pans would have contained food and entrees and the heat from the water jacket would have kept them hot from below. These are particularly rare items. The quality and weight of this particular example is outstanding. The Crest is that as used by the James, 5th Duke of Roxburghe.

Height: 4.3 inches, 10.75cm.
Length, front to tip of handle: 13.5 inches, 33.75cm.
Width: 9.1 inches, 22.75cm.
Weight: 58oz.
