The Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form, with an engine turned base and sides. This example is palely gilded and the cover, unusually, displays a raised scene of a pointer chasing after a game bird, all in a rural landscape. The scene is in very crisp condition and is contained within a cast floral and foliate frame. The interior is finely gilded and displays a grille pierced and engraved with a flower head in a circular frame, all surrounded by scrolls. Charles Rawlings, either on his own, or with William Summers, was one of the finest box makers of this period and this example shows all of the characteristics of his superior work. This is a very rare scene to find on a Vinaigrette and this is only the second time we have seen it over all of the years.

Length: 1.35 inches, 3.38cm.
Width: 1 inch, 2.5cm.
