The mahogany and satinwood inlaid pediment with replaced urns is centred by a flamed mahogany panel above a teardrop cornice. Below are veneered panels of highly figured mahogany and East India satinwood. The two cupboard doors with oval panels enclose a finely fitted interior of oak sliding trays. The lower section is fitted with two short and three long graduated drawers which retain the original period gilt brass handles and is raised on splayed bracket feet. The clothes press bears three trade labels from the original cabinet maker 'MANT'.
The cabinet has three trade labels:
"MANT, Upholder & Cabinet-Maker, High Street, Winchester" (Printed by Darling & Robinson, Gt. Newport Street, London)
John Mant was included in the list of Freeman of the City 1791, and later Mayor for a number of terms. He was also an appraiser, auctioneer and possibly a retailer of furniture made in London.

The cabinet corresponds with Thos. SHEARER's design of a "Wing Clothes
Press" contained in the ‘Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices’, 2nd Edition 1793, plate 3 (plate 67).

Illustrated in ‘Sheraton Furniture’ by Ralph Fastnedge, fig. 85.
