The Tortoiseshell Canister has a deep waisted oval form, with silver band at the base. The cover displays a stand away hinge and beautifully shaped and engraved clasp. The cover is inset with a large cast Commonwealth Royalist Medallion, made circa 1650, almost certainly made by the medallist, Thomas Rawlins. The front of the medallion depicts a portrait bust of Charles I and the reverse with the Royal Arms, surrounded by the Motto of the Order of the Garter and the Sovereign's crown above. The medallion is in quite excellent crisp condition. Most unusual, the box displays a silver gilt interior, a sign of quality of production and a wealthy customer. This piece was almost certainly made commemoratively, as a tribute to the King, fifty years after his execution. An exceptionally rare box.

Height: 1.45 inches, 3.63cm.
