The rectangular desk top is of Belgian black marble with canted corners and gilt bronze banding. The top is very finely inlaid with a central fruit and floral spray framed by a lapis lazuli strap work border with panels containing anthemion and acanthus. A wide foliate border with perched birds depicted in exotic hardstones - including: Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Giallo di Siena, Campan green, Rouge Languedoc and Alabastro complete the decoration along with a red outer band of rouge griotte marble.
An identical bureau plat also by the celebrated ébéniste Mathieu Befort, (dit Befort Jeune), can be found in the Gilbert Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; Illustrated as item 34 in ‘Hardstones; The Gilbert Collection’, by Anna Maria Massinelli.
