Alcide Segoni was an Italian historical and genre painter born in Florence in April 1847. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence under the direction of professor Antonio Ciseri (1821-1891). He made his debut at the Triennial contest of 1871 with a painting entitled ‘Recovery of the body of Catiline, following the battle near Pistoia’ for which he was awarded a gold medal. The painting was later displayed in the Modern Gallery in Florence.
He began producing many historical works in the romantic style including paintings of Michelangelo and Napoleon. As well as exhibiting at the Florence Academy, he also exhibited at the National Artistic Exposition, Venice in 1877, the Turin exhibition of 1880 and the Milan Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1881.
An example of his work can be found in the Witt Library.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
