This is a powerful and dramatic miniature which is reminiscent of the hand of Robert Frain (fl. 1830), an example of whose work was sold at Christie's on 25 June 1968 and then appeared in Robert Bayne Powell collection which Sotheby's sold. The miniature is well painted and colourful; it shows the influence of Raeburn and Andrew Robertson; the lighting behind the head is dark and that on the face dramatic
