This creamware receptacle was made to hold the 'Poor Man's Friend' ointment of lard and beeswax together with caramel, sugar of lead,salts of mercury,oxide of zinc,oxide of bismuth,venetian red,oils of rose,bergamot and lavender.

The concoction was for the treatment of eczema and other skin infections, the zinc oxide being the principal ingredient.

After Roberts' death in 1834, the firm Beach & Barnicott continued the production.
