Item Literature

These extraordinary chairs appear to be a complete one off. The quality of the carving is outstanding, especially as it is executed in English oak, a wood not necessarily the easiest to carve because of its relatively coarse grain. However, it was favoured by leading cabinetmakers of the period, as it was indigenous to this country. George Oakley supplied a set of armchairs in English oak for Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath at Longleat House, Wiltshire.

These chairs would undoubtedly have been made as a special commission for a client that research has yet to reveal.

Item Description / Dealer Expertise

The curved top rail carved with lotus leaves over a back splat carved with oak leaves and acorns, the scrolled front legs magnificently carved with acanthus and mounted by two finely details lions, the arms pads and seat cushions upholstered in a neutral suede
