The vase is boldly painted with a Red Stag with Hind, the reverse painted with Covies of standing and flying Grouse in a woodland setting. The body of the vase is raised on a pivotal base richly adorned with raised-paste gilding against a red ground with similar gilding to trumpet neck.
Samuel Wilson was one of the most renowned painters in the employ of Doulton from 1880-1909 specialising in painting romantic landscapes and animals. His most famous commission was a painted dessert service presented to Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee by Princess Louise. The gilding on the vase is of extraordinary quality and was undertaken by W.H. Skinner who worked on many significant pieces at Doulton Burselm including a number of items exhibited at the Chicago International Exhibition of 1883.
