Charles began his career executing designs in hair, and when only about 9 years of age, exhibited some of this work at the Dublin Society of Artists in 1768 and 1769. In 1772, 1773 and 1774, Master Charles Robertson exhibited likenesses in hair and in 1775 he exhibited miniatures for the first time.

Although painted in parts, it would appear that this miniature is one of these Hair designs, made up wholly of hair affixed to the ivory with gum
