In the European collections of Naturalia begun in the 16 th and 17 th centuries unusual specimens of fungus were eagerly sought after . They were an extraordinary phenomena , unique , springing mysteriously from the earth . Often used by apothecary's they were always associated with alchemy and magical potions .
Put into cabinets of curiosities and endowed with meaning they became objects to be desired by the collector .
