Thrace is an ancient and historic region of the southeastern Balkans, occupying areas in modern-day Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece. The indigenous population were of Indo-European origin and were known as Thracians. Fearsome warriors, the Thracians were divided into numerous tribal groups and often fought as mercenaries for the Macedonians and Greeks. Although previously dismissed by scholars as a primitive society, in fact they formulated an advanced and learned culture, steeped in music and poetry. Gold was plentiful, and as a result Thracian craftsmen were particularly skilled, producing beautifully worked jewellery and ornaments in the medium. The Thracian gold mines would later be exploited by the Macedonians and Romans following its assimilation by Philip II in the mid-third century BC.
