Sizes: a: 23.5cm high, 13cm dia – 9¼ ins high, 5 ins dia.
b: 41cm high, 19.5cm dia. – 16 ins high, 7¾ ins dia.
The metallic lustrous black surface of these characteristic bucchero wares was produced by first burnishing and then firing them in a kiln with a restricted supply of oxygen so that the iron oxides in the clay turned black. They were produced in a wide range of shapes with some following older Italian traditions and some wares imitating Greek prototypes.
