The Etruscans were undoubtedly the wealthiest and in many ways the most sophisticated of the peoples of pre-Roman Italy and their archaeological remains are the most distinctive and spectacular. Many features of Etruscan art, customs and religion were adopted by the Romans so that Etruscan culture lived on after the independent state of Etruria had been absorbed into the Roman republic.
The metallic lustrous black surface of these characteristic bucchero wares was produced by first burnishing and then firing them in a kiln with a restricted supply of oxygen so that the iron oxides in the clay turned black. They were produced in a wide range of shapes with some following older Italian traditions and some wares imitating Greek prototypes.
