An extremely rare pair of English Oak Rood Screen Angels, circa 1450. They are depicted as Angel Bearers, possibly as an allegory symbolising the Light of God. They would probably have been located on, or into a niche on the columns supporting the doors at the centre of the Rood Screen and leading to the altar. They retain a significant amount of their original polychrome colouring, and are in very good condition. The stand is associated and they have later dowels to fix them into place for display purposes. They are reputed to have come from the home of Sam Wolsey, who was an eminent London dealer in early furniture and works of art, and was co-author of “The Age of the Joiner”, Wolsey and Luff.
