Watercolour on ivory in an oval gold frame the reverse with brown silk.
ANTHONY STEWART – 1773 – 1846
Born in Crieff, Perthshire 1773. Studied under Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh and executed landscapes, sketches and drawings of Scottish scenery.
Later devoted himself to miniature painting. Practised first in Scotland and later in London. Stewart exhibited at the R.A., 1807-1820. Painted miniatures of Princess Charlotte and Princess Victoria.
He excelled in painting portraits of children who are usually shown full face, and executed in light clear colours.
Examples of his work are in the collection of H.M. the Queen and others are in the V. & A.M., and the National Galleries of Scotland. One from the National Gallery of Scotland, of Major Edward Fanshawe, R.E., painted in 1824, was exhibited in Edinburgh in 1965.
