A White Marble and Ormolu Mounted Venus Vase Perfume Burner by Matthew Boulton . According to Nicholas Goodison the Venus Vase proved a very popular product mainly used as a model for clocks though some were made as perfume burners .In a sale at Christies in 1778 there were five Venus vases described as " Venus and Cupid in ormoulu , at the Tomb of Adonis . Only one found a buyer at a price of £ 13 10s 0d .
Many were exported and in 1772 the Paris marchand-mercier Charles Raymond Grancher advertises for sale a " Venus weeping at the tomb of Adonis on a white marble base .
Coincidently this one was purchased in Paris . Possibly the same .
