An antique blue and white delft dish with fluting and a scalloped edge. The design is bursting with energy. Painted in deep cobalt blue over a white tin glaze the design is a kaleidescopic vision of tulips and tulip bulbs which radiate outward from the center. The border of the dish is white, the edge is scalloped.
(To see the fluting most clearly see image #3 which shows the unpainted bottom of the fluted dish).
Background of Delft
In the early 17th century delft ceramics were highly prized in the prosperous Netherlands. This tin-glazed earthenware arrived via Italy and Spain where it was known as majolica or faience.
In the city of Delft experienced well paid painters began to decorate a variety of objects in both blue and white or polychrome colors.
By the early 18th century there were over thirty factories in Delft operating kilns and producing a variety of beautifully decorated objects. This was the beginning of the golden age of "Delft".
