A very rare freestanding circular rosewood bookcase inlaid throughout in brass. Note the gallery in the gothic design and the wonderful carved wood lion paw feet on concealed castors. English, circa 1820.
Free standing bookcases became a fashionable addition to the Regency library, reflecting the evolution of such rooms into retreats for relaxation, as indicated by the less formal arrangement and more comfortable seat furniture. Classical designs were still the most fashionable. This was in keeping with the architecture of the room and the popularity of books which so often dealt with ancient architecture, literature, travel, and associated arts. The bookcases circular form allowed a large collection of books to be housed in a small area and could also be used as a plinth to display sculpture. The freestanding arrangement allowed the piece of art to be viewed from every angle.
This particular article is rare, generally being made for large houses
which could accommodate libraries.
A must have for the perfect gentleman wishing to show his wealth and knowledge to his contemporaries.

A similar article is shown in the Regency Furniture
book by Frances Collard.
