An early 19th century bronze skillet with cast inscription to handle "Cox Taunton IV".

Cox's Brass and Iron Foundry was a family business, started by William Cox in 1810. The Foundry was located in Tancred Street, Taunton.

The number four, IV in Roman Numerals, indicates the size.

With wear to the feet as you would expect to see, from it being moved back and forth over the hearth. A skillet, also called a posnet, has a rounded bottom like a cauldron and was designed to sit in the fire (compared to saucepans with flat bottoms designed to sit on top of a stove).
