The surface of the bowl is embellished with fine frames of embossed and chased repoussé (repousse) decoration depicting a series of iconic Burmese figures in high relief, wearing courtly and traditional dress accompanied by a variety of animals such as an elephant, snake and mule.
As with the vast majority of these bowls, the continuous frieze of figures relates to Burmese folklore.
Each frame of the decoration is bordered to the upper portion by scrolling leaf and mask ornamentation.
The scenic ornamentation is amidst bands of scrolling stylised leaf ornamentation.
The underside of the bowl is ornamented with a central lobed motif and contemporary engraved Burmese/Myanmar script inscription.
* The shape of the thabeik bowl is based on alms or begging bowls used by Burmese monks. Thabeik bowls however have no ceremonial or religious use; they are purely ornamental.
