An extremely fine late 19th century French petite-sonnerie striking carriage clock with a fully engraved gilt gorge case with scrolls and foliage.The enamel chapter ring and a subsidiary alarm setting disc are enclosed by a fully engraved mask with foliage decoration.

The fine quality movement strikes on two gongs and is stamped on the back-plate D and C, for the firm Drocourt of Paris, one of the leading Parisian clockmakers of the period. The clock has a substantial platform lever escapement, visable through the bevelled oval top glass.

Pierre and Alfred Drocourt were based in Paris and also at Saint Nicolas d' Aliermont. They exhibited at the Besancon Exhibition in 1860 where they were awarded a bronze medal for their clocks. They also exhibited in London in 1862. They recieved numerous medals over a period of time in Paris as well as London, including gold and silver, and the Father and Son were well known for their very fine carriage clocks.

Pierre was exhibiting in the 1860's and his son, Alfred in the 1880's Their trademark, was the 'D' and 'C' with an image of a carriage clock between them. On occasions they signed their work on the dial or in an oval on the backplate, with their name and address 'Drocourt Paris'.
