This exquisite ivory double comb was created in France in the 19th Century, over 100 years ago. The piece is finely carved in a Gothic Revival style, inspired by the art of the 14th-Century.

The comb is decorated on both sides with scenes from the Passion of Christ. Each side features three episodes, separated from one another by columns and contained beneath a Gothic arcade. One side depicts the Arrest of Christ, then his trail either before the Sanhedrin or Pontius Pilate, and lastly Christ carrying his own cross. The other side is carved with the Crucifixion, Entombment and Resurrection of Christ. These figurative scenes are framed by a trefoil border. The upper and lower edge is lined with comb teeth and the corners are decorated with carvings of stained-glass windows.
This ivory work was in Mr and Mrs George Cowell’s art collection, which was bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1925. The previous owner of the ivory was the grandson of Mr Athelstan Riley, who was Mr and Mrs George Cowell’s son.
