A late eighteenth carved wood stags with the remains of the original paint. This object has a much earlier feel to it than the carved bears and stags' heads made at the end of the nineteenth century. Hence we believe it to have been made in the late eighteenth century.

The Royal connection:
Hunting for sport has been a royal prerogative since ancient times. George Gascoigne's 'The Noble Art of Venery' was dedicated to notable royal hunters. Tales of Kings' bravery in the hunt was used as propaganda. The royal hunt could at times be a large public occasion with hundreds of participants and spectators. Stags were the most prized target.
