A rare find. An early English silver mug of large size and very heavy gauge silver dating from the Charles II period. Uninscribed. With a plain straight sided form, simple reeded bands to top and base and an ā€œSā€ scroll handle. Excellent colour. Weight 447 grams, 14.3 troy ounces. Height 12.8 cm. Diameter 10.3 cm (top). Contains 1000 ml. London 1678. Makers John Sutton.
This excellent tankard is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Good patina. Heavy gauge silver. Stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks. The makers mark is not fully struck but is clearly identifiable in Jacksons. Handle unmarked.
Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
This must one of the first mugs to be made in England. Mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680.
