Chinese school oil painting on canvas of a Clipper under full sail, flying Eastern Queen in reverse from the main mast and Captain Marryats code numeral 7304 and red Ensign from the Mizzen. Retained in the orginal Chinese hard wood and gilt frame.
William Millburn, at the age of only 23, founded the shipping firm which was to become W. M. Millburn & Co as part owner of the Schooner John Twizel. Three years later he was operating the barques Halicore, Pero and Walton in the coal trade in the north east of England. By 1856 he had extended his operations to deep sea voyages, gradually introducing larger sailing ships Eastern Queen and equinox on a service to the West Indies and the Hindoostan to India and China.
