Very fine example of a Regency Chinoiserie Lacquered cabinet dating from 1820. This sort of painted furniture was extremely popular among the well-travelled wealthy English of the period. Most of them would not necessarily have made it to China, but they would have read and learnt about it. The Prince Regent himself was very interested in painted lacquer furniture themed from around the world, the most important example of which is his Brighton Pavillion. This Chinese/Indian monstrosity demonstrates high Regency frippery in its extreme.
This cabinet is a much more restrained than the Pavillion in Brighton. It has good proportions, proper tennon construction, thin panels the and very fine decoration. Those who remember the Kings Road in the 80s will recognise this as a real Lord Rendlesham piece.
