An attractive Dutch silver bowl of oval form with deep embossed decoration of a horse and rider to front and back and birds to each side. The cast handles show two children holding garlands of fruit. Weight 240 grams, 7.7 troy ounces. Height 8.5 cms. Spread 25.5 cms Top 16 x 12.5 cms. Marked underneath with a full row of fake/pseudo marks which originated in the Dutch province of Friesland. Circa 1870.
This lovely bowl is in very good condition with no damage or signs of restoration. The silver marks are clear. The gilt is unworn.

Two-handled silver bowls were used to celebrate childbirth but may have been passed around at other festive occasions as well when brandewijn, liquor distilled from wine to which sugar and raisins were added, would be served from them with a spoon.
