Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Canteen of Cutlery for Twelve Persons
Offered by AC Silver
The surface of each handle, excluding the table and dessert knives, is embellished with a contemporary engraved initial 'G'**.
The surfaces of the fundamental and serving pieces are each embellished with thread decoration paralleling the shape of the handle and encompassing the rounded heel.
The reverse of each spoon and anterior of each fork features a pip to the handle terminal.
This sterling silver flatware set consists of 101 pieces:
12 Table knives
12 Table forks
12 Table spoons
12 Dessert knives
12 Dessert forks
12 Dessert spoons
12 Fish knives
12 Fish forks
Pair of sauce ladles
This impressive service benefits from a twelve place setting fish service; this fish service bears the same credentials as the rest of the straight service but due to the hallmarking system the fish service bears the date letter 'm' and the others feature 'n'.
The sterling silver blade to the fish knives and forks are ornamented with tooled paralleling borders in addition to bright cut engraved scrolling leaf designs.
The fundamental pieces of this silver cutlery set, including the impressive serving pieces but excluding the knives, have been crafted by the renowned silversmiths Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd in 1908; as expected with period flatware crafted in London, this canteen is a superior gauge of silver.
The replacement*** table and dessert knives have been crafted in the Fiddle and Thread pattern; if not required this canteen can be sold without these knives.
This exceptional comprehensive sterling silver flatware set is fitted to the original and impressive oak wood lift up lid canteen box with a lift out tray.
The original sale of this service did not include knives and there are no available compartments to accommodate them to the original interior of the box, therefore the table and dessert knives are supplied in felt cutlery rolls, which not only protect the items in storage but significantly reduces tarnishing.
The original presentation canteen box features a brass carrying handle to either end and two inset panels to the interior rim displaying the retailer's mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd' and '112, Regent Street, London, W'.
* "Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.
** The initials to the solid silver pieces can be erased if required.
*** Predominately all antique silver canteens have replacement knives as the originals have not stood the test of time.
