This antique sugar box is embellished with embossed and chased decoration reproducing the details of the bird's plumage and anatomical features.
This impressive sterling silver sugar box retains the original, hallmarked push fit cover/head.
The cover/head retains the original bead eyes.
This magnificent and large, chained parrot is supported by a silver perch ornamented with impressive wood grain decoration; each link of the original sterling standard chain is hallmarked.
The lower portion of the perch is encircled with a chased band of leaf ornamentation, to a ribbed knop in junction with the base.
The hallmarked base of this impressive silver parrot sugar box is encircled with chased decorated single leaf acanthus designs accented with a matte background.
The interior of the box and rim of the sleeve retain the original gilding.
The hallmarks struck to the cover, body, chain and base include:
Importer's mark: AG (Arthur Graf)
Import mark: London, England
Silver quality/purity mark: 925 (sterling, 925/1000)
Import date mark: o (1909)
Maker's mark: SJL (untraced)
Large examples in such an exceptional condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
