This exceptional antique 18th century 20ct rose gold Snuff box has an oval form.

The body of this antique gold box is embellished with panels of engine turned decoration* alternating with four pillars accented with an applied basket of fruit below a yellow gold scrolling design.

The lower portion of the box is encompassed with an applied yellow gold evolte-scrolling leaf decorated border.

This impressive box is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with a continuation of the decoration to the body.

The upper plateau of the cover and underside of the body are embellished with further engine turned decoration encircled with an applied yellow gold scrolling leaf border, reflecting the same style and formation to that of the sides.

This impressive antique piece has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 20ct gold; often such 18th century boxes are a higher purity of gold than modern examples.

This antique gold box is in exceptional example of its type; in addition to being a very good weight for its size, this box feels very good and sharp in the hand.

* Engine turned decoration was first used in the 16th century on soft materials such as wood and ivory, until the 18th century when it was adopted for soft metals such as gold and silver.

** This mark was struck by the 'Fermier du driot' - tax farmer after the maker's mark and was used to declare the item was the permitted standard/finesse.
