This superb porcelain soup tureen represents the finest of late 18th century French neoclassical style. It is large and lavishly decorated, but in a subtle and understated way. The pattern is known as "Barbeau". It was the favorite pattern of French Queen Marie Antoinette and her royal court. The design of the tureen is focused on order, balance, and restraint.
It has a wonderful provenance as it was made in the factory of the Duc D'Angouleme, the eldest son of Charles X of France.
The tureen was most likely made for a member of the French Royal Court. In the center of the cover is a gold wreath encircling initials. Above it is a small wreath of tiny roses showing that the tureen was made for high aristocracy or royalty. The initials and wreath are repeated on the body of the tureen and on the stand.
Placed on a sideboard this tureen cover and stand will add elegance and beauty to any dinning room.
The tureen and stand are marked on the bottom in iron red "Manufacture ... du "DUC D’ANGOULÊME".
