Antique 'Gainsborough' Library Chair standing on tall square taper legs with brass cups and casters all round, a generous sweep to the front of the arms and small amount of carved decoration to the front of the leg and the arms. This one is an unusually high back version of this genre of chair, made famous by Thomas Gainsborough paintings. These chairs predated the invention of the coil spring (1828) which gives them much more elegant proportions than upholstered furniture made after that date. This chair is made of good dense grained mahogany with crisp carving and moulded detail on the front of the arms. English circa 1790
