Two sides of the case are embellished with panels of engraved decoration depicting men on horseback accompanied by dogs, passing a character speaking the elucidating word 'hulo'.
One end of the box displays further engraved decoration displaying two hands held together.
The posterior side of this impressive box bears the inscription 'When you have viewed this Box a'round, Return it to the owner safe and sound'.
The underside is illustrated with an engraved horse drawn carriage scene below the wording 'A Gentleman & a Lady going to Gretna Green, Post haste. Yea Hip, Yea a Hip, Go it!' in addition to the spoken words from the vehicle 'go on'.
This exceptional example of antique silverware is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover; this cover protrudes the body to the anterior surface forming a thumbpiece.
The cover is ornamented with an engraved decoration depicting a further carriage scene in a rural setting accented with birds in a sun-filled sky.
NOTE: In the late 18th century Gretna Green was seen as Las Vegas is to the present day. This small Scottish town became legendary for eloping English couples, allowing them to elope and marry without parental consent. In the 1800's a pewter box was crafted with a carriage scene
