A fine quality antique sterling silver tray of oval form with side carrying handles. Classical style with broad gadroon and shell borders. The centre has an excellent deep hand chased cartouche containing a large armorial with the motto “Fac et Spera” meaning “Do and Hope”. Weight 3840 grams, 123.4 troy ounces. Spread across handles 74 cms. Length 61 cms. Width 46 cms. London 1808. Maker John Mewburn.
This lovely tray is in good but used condition. The chased decoration is crisp and original. Stamped on the reverse with a clear set of full English silver hallmarks. There are traces on the reverse of an old repair to the edge of the border.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
The first trays were oval shaped and did not appear until the late 18th century. The rectangular form was not generally seen until the early 1800’s. Some early salvers were originally called trays, this word is now used when there are two handles.
