A good smooth faced ladies niblick in original condition with hickory shaft and suede leather grip. The head stamped ‘D. & W. Auchterlonie, St Andrews’ with the ‘Rose’ cleek mark of Robert Condie, shaft also stamped ‘Auchterlonie, St Andrews’. A very nice original decorative golf club.
Auchterlonie was a family firm in St Andrews making hand crafted wooden golf clubs since it was established in 1895, by brothers Tom, David and Willie Auchterlonie. The brothers were sons of a St Andrews master plumber and were apprenticed to one of the famous Scottish club makers, Robert Forgan & Son, in the early 1890’s. The Auchterlonie golf clubs were used by many of the top names in golf in the early 1900’s due to the high level of quality and precision they offered.
The \'ROSE\' cleek mark of Robert Condie was in use from 1890 until 1936. Robert Condie (1863-1923) was one of the better known cleekmakers of St. Andrews and was known for his handmade quality, having learnt clubmaking from James Anderson of Anstruther. Condie travelled to the states in 1890\'s to see how the mass production of the drop forged club heads was achieved. Although impressed, his knowledge of clubmaking prompted him to continue hand forging iron heads. After the World War I the firm was known as R.Condie & Sons Ltd and was eventually taken over by Robert\'s son George B. Condie.
