Tale of Genji. Edo period 1600-1868. Fine Japanese fitted lacquered incense box. Decorated wood with gold and silver. Hiramaki-e and takamaki-e lacquer along with fine shell work and gold nashiji. The interior has a rectangular tray which represents chapter number 24. The two boats which include the phoenix and the dragon heading towards the pavilion.Made by Zohika established 1661. The box also retains the original outer case as shown in the photographs
