William Shayer was a self taught artist, who lived in Southampton and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. He painted landscapes and animals in two broad themes: woodland scences with gypsies, rustic folk, and animals; coastal scences with boats and fisherfolk.
He was a member of the Royal Academy (1820 - 1843) and the British Institute.
His son (William J) was also a painter.
