This is a beautiful oil painting on canvas, Circa 1880 in date and in its original fabulous gilded carved wood, foliate Florentine frame. It is after the original XVII Century old master painting by Guido Reni.

The painting represents St Michael fighting Lucifer. He is pictured as a strong warrior, wearing armor and sandals typical for warriors. He is holding a large sword in his left hand and a chain in the other. He is keeping his foot firmly on the head of Lucifer and shows a final victory of "good over evil".

Frame: 135 cm x 110 cm

Painting: 103 cm x 79 cm

Condition:

It is in excellent condition and is a delightful and tranquil picture which will grace any room in your home.

The original painting can be found in Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, or Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins, a church in Rome, Italy, commissioned in 1626 to Guido Reni by Pope Urban VII.

St Michael, Archangel, is an unusual saint because he is recognised in many religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. His biblical origins lie in the Book of Daniel, where he is described as the guardian angel of the Hebrew nation, although his real beginnings are to be found in the religion of ancient Persia, a starkly dualist faith in which gods of light waged eternal war on gods of darkness.

Michael subsequently came to represent the triumph of light over darkness as interpreted by the Christian Church, in the teachings of which he came to embody the triumph of Christ over anti-Christ.

Michael was subsequently adopted by Christianity as a saint, in the broad sense, of the Church militant. Because of his unusual status and because, unlike most other saints, he was never a martyr and therefore cannot be said to have died on any particular day.
