This fine antique orientalist sculpture, cast entirely in ormolu, is the work of the sculptor Theodore Riviere (French, 1857-1912) and was cast by the foundry of the Susse Freres (French, 1839-1970's). The sculpture depicts a male figure, on his knees, desperately grasping the waist of a female figure, who stands passively with her arms by her sides. Both of the figures are clad in oriental dress with intricate details, jewellery and headware. The figures are set upon a stepped, circular plinth, which is signed 'THEODORE RIVIERE' and 'SUSSE Fres Edt'.

The figures depict Salammbo and Matho, her lover, from the historic novel of 1862 by Flaubert, Salammbo. The novel tells the story of the revolt in the historic city of Carthage, which would now be set in modern-day Libya. The chief of the rebels, Matho, falls in love with the daughter of the Carthaginian general, Salammbo, against whom he is rebelling. Eventually, Matho was executed at the feet of Salammbo, and this is the moment that the sculpture depicts.

The original sculpture 'Carthage' is displayed in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, where it has been housed since it was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1895.
