Antique plain undecorated creamware pottery plat de menage center piece. The top finial figure depicts Plenty holding a cornucopia of bounty.Staffordshire or Yorkshire pottery circa 1780.
EXHIBITION......IF THESE POTS COULD TALK.
This creamware pottery centrepiece would have been the focus point for the dining table of the upper and middle classes in the late 18th century.
These pieces are used for serving various types of seafood a luxury afforded to the few in 18th century England.
The figure on top of the piece is Plenty and she is holding a cornucopia of bounty.
I often think of the staff in the country house and gentlemens residences kitchens preparing the dinner and arranging the seafood extravagenses onto this creamware piece for presentation to the guests. Many years ago I did sell a similar item so tall that it was made in three pieces and stood five foot high. What a spectacle it would have made on the table.
