The body of the tankard is embellished with fine and impressive later chased decoration depicting stemmed floral and foliate sprays accented with opposing scroll decorated borders in addition to panels of scale and trellis textures.
The decoration to the body incorporates a large oval shaped vacant cartouche encompassed with further later chased floral and scroll ornamentation.
This antique silver tankard retains the original hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted with a fine and impressive volute scrolling thumbpiece.
The domed portion of the cover is further embellished with impressive later chased floral and foliate decoration in addition to a band of shaped foliate decoration to the lower portion.
This antique silver tankard is fitted with a fine and impressive S scroll handle ornamented with an impressive escutcheon shaped decorated terminal and impressive chased leaf textures encompassing the upper socket; the handle is struck with the maker's mark as to be expected.
The domed spreading foot is encompassed with a further band of chased leaf decoration, reflecting a subtly simplified design to that of the cover.
The underside of the tankard bears the retailer's mark 'Allan & Hayes'**.
* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).
** This retailer was in operation circa 1860; it can be determined due to the style of the chased embellishment, they commissioned/crafted the ornamentation.
