This magnificent antique Victorian Scottish sterling silver freedom casket has a rectangular form.

The surface of the box is encompassed with chased scrolling Scottish thistle decoration, all on a matt background.

The ornamentation to the anterior surface of the casket is accented with a central applied decorated cartouche displaying the incorporated pierced monogram style date '1875' above the bannered bright cut engraved inscription 'James Cor Probost'.

This impressive monographic statement is flanked with two applied simplified coats of arms, incororating a lion passant guardant crowned with an imperial crown and collared with an open one with the motto 'A Fin' - To the End* to one side and a pot of three growing lilies with 'Dei Donvm' - Gift of God** to the other.

The lower portion of the anterior surface is further embellished with the presentation inscription 'William Robertson, Charles Edward, James Foggue, Bailies in addition to 'George Hall, Nicoll, William Thomson, Duncan Macdonald, Bailies'.

The upper and lower rims of the box are encompassed with an applied bead decorated border.

This jewellery casket is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover with an impressive tiered leaf decorated border to the chamfered edge.

The upper plateau of the cover is further ornamented with chased scrolling thistle decoration incorporating three interlacing circular cartouche; the outer segments display an applied full coat of arms identical to that of the body.

The central circular cartouche is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved inscription 'The freedom of the Royal Burgh of Dundee, the certificate of which is enclosed in this casket was unanimously coferred by The Provost Magistrates & Town Council of Dundee on the right honorable David Craham Drummond Ogilvy, Earl of Aurlie, Baron Ogilvy of Alyth & Lintrathen, K.T. In respect of his eminent position of public services, & in testimony of their appreciation of the cordial & equitable manner in which his Lordship franted a supply of water from Lintrathen to the town of Dundee. Dundee 2ND September 1875'.

The hinged cover opens to reveal the crimson lining; this has been recovered to replicate the same appearance as the original covering.

This magnificent freedom casket is fitted with two fine and original ring loop handles above an impressive lion mask ornamentation.

This antique silver casket is supported by four impressive opposing scroll decorated feet, each incorporating an impressive dragon head to the upper portion; this dragon ornamentation is a dedication to the supporters of the coat of arms of Dundee.

The underside of the casket features the original leatherette covering.

** These heraldic details are associated with the city of Dundee, Scotland.
