A very interesting maple wood bowl of wide, shallow design with a solid silver mount. The silver has 3 bands of broad bands of silver studding and a broad band of hand engraving in the Chinese style incorporating fans, flutes and banners in oriental script. Height 4.7 cm. Diameter 13.5 cm. Unmarked silver. Circa 1890. Possibly Chinese.
This very practical antique bowl is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Unmarked silver, probably 925 grade. The engravings are sharp. Some small dents to the centre.
Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
A mazer is a wide, flat bottomed bowl without handles. Made of a dense and grained wood such as maple wood. These drinking vessels of northern European origin were mostly made from the 12th to 16th century. Over 60 British medieval mazers are known to survive of which ten are on display at the museum of Canterbury. The word mazer comes from either “masar” Old German for “spot” or “gnarled grain on trees”, or “masere” Old French or “mosurr” Old Norse meaning maple tree.
