Rare unrecorded figure of a bear cub modeled muzzled and tethered with a metal chain on a green base. The figure is a significant size and is strongly decorated in pratt colours.
Bear baiting was a popular "entertainment" from Elizabethan times until it was banned in England in 1835.
The figure is an exceptional piece and reflects the artistic expertise of the Staffordshire potters.
Corner of base restored and crack in hind leg professionally repaired.
With Alistair Sampson London.
