This profusely inlaid Syrian Damascus games table dates from Circa 1910, and has multiple geometric and asymmetric inlays of various woods and mother of pearl.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a similarly inlaid interior and a removable reversible top with green baize on one side and a chess board on the other. This can be removed to reveal the stunning inset backgammon table below.

The whole top swivels to reveal a space which can be used to store cards and game pieces. The table is raised on four shaped legs united by a wide inlaid stretcher which has a platform centre. It is a wonderful example of Syrian furniture and is a very pretty decorative piece.

It has a hidden drawer on each side containing the original Syrian backgammon pieces and four brass dishes, one sits on each corner for gambling chips.

The table is exquisitely crafted in hardwood and features wonderful inlaid decoration comprising, ebony, bone, walnut and various fruitwoods.

Syria and its people are known for many things, but chief among those perhaps is their culture’s long history of art and craftsmanship, particularly with regard to wood furniture and cabinetry. Syrian carpenters, joiners, and cabinetmakers have a rich tradition of making ornate and intricately carved pieces of furniture, cabinets, decorative boxes and doors. These functional pieces of art are often inlaid with mother of pearl, carved and hand painted designs and motifs, or sometimes a combination of other woods, known as mosaic wood.
