A fabulous one of a kind piece from the late Victorian / Art Nouveau period - drinking horn, made from a cattle horn, with electro-plated silver rim, lid and display stand.

Drinking horns have been known since classical antiquity, and are symbolic of the cornucopia or horn of plenty, representing abundance and nourishment. They were important ceremonial pieces used for toasting throughout the middle ages, and remain in use today especially in Germanic Europe and the Balkans.

Hallmarked WMF and EP on bottom edge of stand. WMF was the hallmark of W├╝rttemberg Metal Factory, founded in 1880, and located in Geislingen, a small town in Germany between Munich and Stuttgart. The firm developed a number of important innovations in the field of electro-plating, developed an international reputation and is still in business today. EP stands for electro-plate.

Length from tip of horn to handle on top of lid 20.5 inches (52 cm).
