The oval 18 ct yellow gold frame displays a feature three-dimensional representation of the mercat cross in Edinburgh*.
The plain outer border of the brooch is accented with six paired chalcedony plaques (carnelian, heliotrope/bloodstone and mottled jasper) displayed alternately between chased decorated thistle motifs.
The antique Scottish brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and hook fastening.
This impressive example of Scottish 'pebble jewellery' is clearly hallmarked to the reverse with the maker's mark (R.L.C).
This antique Scottish brooch has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18 ct gold.
*NOTE: The Edinburgh mercat cross (market cross) depicted was built in 1885. The octagonal drum shaped base supports an octagonal shaft surmounted by a unicorn carrying the saltire pennant. The structure provided a platform for proclamations.
